1. Colonia del Sacramento: A Step Back in Time

Step into the past at Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay's first city, an old colony of the Portuguese empire founded in 1680. Preserving its colonial architecture, particularly the charming "Calle de los Suspiros", Colonia is a delightful city to explore. Indulge in the culinary delights of Charco bistró, with its panoramic view of the “Rio de la Plata”, and explore the city by bike. Finally, you should not miss the only bullring in the country, “Plaza de los Toros”. It was inaugurated in 1910 and it could only display 8 shows or “corridas” before the event was prohibited by law in 1912. Nowadays it is a museum, and you can go there and have a tour of the inside and the place where the spectators watched the event.

2. Cabo Polonio

In the east coast of Uruguay, you can go to Cabo Polonio. This is a protected area where you can go in summer and stay a few nights. It is a special place because there are no cars and there are only houses. You only can arrive in a public truck. Cabo Polonio is the representation of slow living. You can go there to enjoy the beach and forget your routine. Electricity and water only serve the essential necessities, it is not abundant, so locals protect it a lot. You can go to the lighthouse and enjoy the view from there. Near the lighthouse you can see sea lions chilling and sunbathing all summer long.

3. Salto del Penitente and Salus Park

Salto del Penitente is in Minas, in the department of Lavalleja. It is the perfect place to visit if you are a fan of nature and hiking. It is a natural waterfall and scenic spot. Surrounded by lush, this destination offers visitors a tranquil and natural environment. The waterfall itself cascades over a rocky ledge into a pool below, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The area around Salto del Penitente is known for its hiking trails and opportunities to explore nature. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty, take a dip in the natural pool, and appreciate the tranquility of this outdoor location. You can also go to Salus Park, which is a natural reserve and a place where the company Salus extracts their water to sell. You can see the fountain of the “Puma” (native animal).
